Designed by Jakob Erbar shortly before his death in 1935 and released in 2 weights posthumously in 1936. Walter Höhnisch added an italic in 1937. All 3 styles were available in the same year for the Linotype machine. [Seemann] A reworked version of the Regular was issued in 1945 as Candida Werkschrift. Höhnisch also provided a kursiv fett (extrabold italic) and a schmalmager (condensed, 1957). Baltica is an adaptation made at the Polygraphmash type design bureau in 1951–52 by Vera Chiminova, Isay Slutsker, et al. [ParaType/MyFonts]

The digital versions by Bitstream/Tilde and Linotype/Adobe span the 3 core styles. Scangraphic has them in two size-specific versions each. URW’s add a Stencil D Medium, while Elsner+Flake has the two condensed weights. OL Candida (Dennis Ortiz-Lopez, 2004) is a single-style revival of the schmalmager (as Medium Condensed). The digital Baltica offers the widest range of styles.
