Breite magere Grotesk was cut at Bauer & Co in Stuttgart (not to be confused with the Bauersche Gießerei in Frankfurt) sometime before 1895, presumably by Friedrich Wilhelm Bauer. Both Akzidenz-Grotesk (Berthold, from 1898 on) and Monotype Grotesk, Serie 51, are based on this cut. [Bertheau]
A bolder weight, Breite fette Grotesk, was cut before 1890. It reappears in a heavily revised version in the 1895 specimen. [Kupferschmid]
