Released by ATF in 1904. Its design is generally credited to Joseph W. Phinney, but some authorities give some or all credit to Morris Fuller Benton. It is a modernized adaption of Priory Text, an 1870s version of Caslon Text. Flemish Black offered a different set of caps. [McGrew]
Monotype’s variation is Old English. It can be distinguished by the missing spurs on ‘bhk’, among other things. There are digital versions of Cloister Black from Bitstream/Tilde and CastleType.
