Pornographisme deals with the history of French X-rated films from the 1970s and 1980s, and in particular the unique genre of (typo)graphic movie posters that evolved in reaction to censorship.

When the law took precedence over freedom of expression, and taxation became a means of oppression against pornographic film, the producers had no choice but to lay low. The posters on the cinema windows abandoned too explicit images. Depictions of buxom actresses were replaced with flashily lettered titles, using a vocabulary of another time, carried by typography that is unforgettable and embedded in its time. These very graphic posters pay tribute to those producers and distributors who did not always have deep pockets, but were never short of ideas.

“This is a pretty rad way to see Cooper Nouveau in use for the first time.”, tweets Dave Foster. Cooper Nouveau, designed in the 1960s or 1970s by Dave West for Photo-Lettering Inc. and revived by Foster for the digital PLINC library in 2015, is a perfect match for this juicy retro project.
