Sports Illustrated sometimes used W. Seifert’s Too Much Shaded in the 1970s. It may have been most fitting with this very issue. On the cover Sportsman of the Year Steve Cauthen is featured. In his second year of riding, he won the U.S. Triple Crown, while still a teenager. Also featured in this issue, speed skater Eric Heiden, runner Wesley Paul, and tennis player Tracy Austin.
