    Re:collection:

Epicurean was the first Australian magazine devoted entirely to food and wine. Under the guidance of its editor and founder, Alan Holdsworth, the publication played a significant evolutionary role in shaping what we now recognise as a vibrant and coherent food and wine culture. Holdsworth’s choice of Les Mason as the magazine’s inaugural art director would prove an inspired and astute decision. Over a remarkable 13-year period the ex-pat American, supported by his studio team, designed, photographed and illustrated his way through 77 issues of the magazine. This remains a phenomenal body of work, a high watermark in the distinguished career of Australian graphic design’s most influential figure.

A fantastic find, Stephen. Thanks to Dominic Hofstede and the Re:collection team for sharing! The ever-changing typographic choices are astonishing—who needs consistency when you have a great title? Also check out later titles, e.g. an early use of Novarese’s Stop for No. 31 (June 1971), or Jean Alessandrini’s rarely seen Hypnos for No. 35 (Feb. 1972), or Disco for No. 42 (April/May 1973), etc.

For the unidentified typeface on No. 8: This French Clarendon is distinguished by the bracketing and the plain-top A. I’m tempted to assign French Clarendon (wood) to it.

      French Clarendon (wood) it is!

Yes, I was going to add the full run here, but then it was just too much. Will add later editions in another post.

Already looking forward to the next batch!
